As private companies seek to expand data centers to meet the demand for artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, as well as explore EV fleet options, the power grid faces increased supply constraints and reliability challenges.
A trio of alternative power sources may be the answer to these pressures, offering sustainable solutions that bolster energy resilience.
1. Nuclear Power
According to a newsletter from the American Energy Society, tech companies such as Amazon and Google say they will invest in small nuclear reactors. Additionally, the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant is planned to restart to supply power to Microsoft data centers.
2. Hydrogen Hubs
The Department of Energy is testing seven hydrogen hubs to prove the viability of supplying and distributing the fuel. Three hubs have met their first-phase planning targets and already received significant funding.
3. Geothermal Energy
A new geothermal power project is being developed in Utah. When completed, the Cape Station energy project is expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 2 million homes. We’ll be keeping an eye on the progress of these projects over the next few years.
