Convenience retailer Energy Mart is testing Amazon One palm scanners that facilitate contactless payment and other account-based tasks.
The technology recognizes unique features on the palm’s surface after users wave their hand over the scanner. The advantage over other contactless payment options? Customers don’t need to take out their wallet or phone.
Amazon unveiled the technology in September 2020. The palm scanners are being used in other Amazon offerings such as Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go, as well as select Whole Foods stores. The technology is also being used to verify ages for beer purchases at Coors Field in Denver. Panera Bread is testing the program’s ability to sign up for the restaurant’s loyalty program.
